Impulse Control

Impulse control disorders make it hard to resist certain urges, even when acting on them can cause harm. They’re linked to changes in the brain’s self-control and reward systems, creating tension before the act and relief afterward. Some of the common types include kleptomania (feeling a strong urge to steal things, not for personal need or value, but for the thrill of it), trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other areas) and intermittent explosive disorder (sudden aggressive outbursts). These conditions often occur alongside mood, anxiety, or substance use issues, and early support can greatly improve outcomes.

  • Impulse control disorders follow a common pattern—an overwhelming urge to act, even when it could cause harm. Typical signs include:

    • Strong urges or cravings to carry out a specific act.

    • Rising tension, restlessness, or anxiety before acting.

    • A feeling of relief, pleasure, or satisfaction immediately afterward.

    • Repeating the behavior despite knowing the risks or consequences.

    • Struggling to control when, where, or how the behavior happens.

    • Emotional, social, or work-related problems caused by the behavior.

    • Sometimes, guilt or regret once the act is over.

The symptoms often follow the same cycle: tension → action → relief.

  • In our sessions, we will work together to understand the triggers and thought patterns driving your impulses, so you can respond differently when they arise. Using evidence-based approaches like CBT, REBT, NLP and mindfulness, I’ll help you build practical strategies to pause, reflect, and choose healthier actions in the moment. We’ll also address any underlying stress, anxiety or mood concerns that may be fueling the behavior. Over time, you shall regain a sense of control, reduce the cycle of tension and regret and feel more confident in your managing urges.
